RACK, sb.2 Nhb. Dur. [rak.] The brandling trout, Salmo salar. Also in comp. Rack-rider. Nhb. Brockett Gl. (1846); Nhb.1 In Redesdale. ‘There are a good many brandling trouts or pars ─ called racks in this part of the country ─ caught in the Reed,’ Rambles in Nhb. (1835) 131. Dur. Hutchinson Hist. Cum. (1794) I. 460. [Swed. vrak, refuse (Widegren); cp. Du. een wracken haringh, a cast-away herring (Hexham).]
